It has now gone into dormancy. Yesterday I cut the spike, and peeled off all of the papery sheath I could. I saw a few nubs. Perhaps the new growth(s)? I put it out of sight so I wouldn't be tempted to water it.

It is that time of year to do that, mine are all going in another week, but I do remove the media first and leave them bare root for the winter.

if the plant is in active growth, it,s ok to water even with the main plants bottom leave going brown. light fertilizer till new growth is five to six inches high. than back to summer watering,& feeding.[pic. not working]will down load later, your three weeks from blooming at this point
on that spike, in winter no that's no water "they will rot if you water the plant next to them"......lol
