I've always found the 'cane' classification confusing. That's why I've been working on learning about the sections of the genus. The info can be hard to find, but not really - not when you get a book or find the right Web site.

Sections are groups of related species within a genus. The species within each section are usually similar in appearance and their culture is typically consistent.

Pick a Dend you have in your collection and learn what section it's from and the appropriate culture. Then move on and learn about another, etc. It's particularly important coming into the winter season. There's a lot of variability on winter treatment. Some Dends want no water from Oct till Feb, others want to be watered business as usual.

If you don't know what section your Dend is in, I don't mind looking up its parentage and giving you the section names.

We are working on that in the other thread. Seems odd that a winter rest plant would be putting out a flower and a new growth!!! But let's keep that discussion over there instead of breaking it up.

BTW, I only have the one Dendrobium.

Does any one have a picture of the two types? I find it helpful to see both flowers as we las leaves and pseudoblbs to help me identify what I have.

I am so glad to have those dendrobiums sorted out as I have one of each, given to me and I did not know which was soft and which was hard and you know what, I had a guess and I guessed right.
