Crossing between A. lawrencianum X V. denisoniana.
Nice contrasting colors!
Amazing colors Zain!!
Beautiful!
I find it interesting to speculate what each parent contributed to the hybrid. Mostly it is denisoniana, but the Aerides comes out in the lip colour I suppose.
Aerides lawrenceana was named for a man who was President of the RHS at the time, also a member of our Parliament, etc., ( Major Sir Trevor Lawrence MP) He trained as a doctor ( medical) and worked in India for 10 years before succeeding to the title when his father died . He was very interested in science - especially orchid science, in the early days of hybridising and was chair at a big RHS conference in 1899 which is now regarded as the first ever International Conference on the science of genetics. By the way, he was not short of money ; according to a book in my possession he paid an enormous amount of money for the first plant seen in England , at an auction, which was then named in his honour as Aerides lawrenceana - the sum would be equivalent to many thousands of pounds sterling today - those were the days of orchid mania, when they were only grown by millionaires, Kings and Emperors....
Very interesting hybrid and Thank you so much for the information Geoff.
It's beautiful Zain!
Nice colour combination and must be very frangrant. I have seen this primary hybrid before, but Aerides lawrenciae was dominating in the cross as it was mostly purple colour so I didn't buy it. I like yours better because you can see yellow from Vanda denisoniana and purple lip from Aerides lawrenciae. Hopefully, I will find another one with this colour someday.
awesom
Cute colors! I want to know the scent, too.
