I think this may be a maidenhair fern based on the thin black stems, but I'm not sure. I tend to kill maidenhair's when I try to grow them. This came up on its own. If anyone has a better ID, please let me know.

It is a maidenhair but I don't know the species. I have Northern maidenhair growing under my deck. Pretty things.

Thanks for looking. Unfortunately when I try to grow them; they die - when I give up on them; they grow. Maddening! I've looked at a number of photos online, but can't find one that looks close enough. Maybe it needs to be a larger plant, and will then show different characteristics to make it more recognizable. All I know for sure is that it doesn't resemble any I've tried to grow up to now except for the thin black stems, and that it prefers a pot that is always damp.

I think you are correct that more leaf differentiation will occur as it matures making an identification easier.
