    Default Dendrobium spectabile

    Hi All,

I picked up one of these also...nice plant in nice shape...in about a 3" pot and is probably 18" tall w/4 or 5 canes.

Have done some reading and people say they have to grow forever before blooming? Someone had one for years w/no flowering, set it outside and let it dry out one summer and when she brought it back in got tons of spikes.

What have I gotten myself into??

    Thanks

    hi
I think that you may have your work cutout on this one.Having just had a read from the link below ,it is going to need Phalie temps but more humidity
and may be about the same light as the Phalies.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

    Murray is right!
This species needs to grow into pretty sizable plant (aka it is a space hog) before they will bloom. So it will take a good many years from the day you purchase the plant to the day that it blooms. Just hope that it grows well all that time! A warm grower (hence phalies temp) but it will tolerate the warmer side of intermediate temperatures.
    Cheers. Hoa.

Oh great...that's not what I wanted to hear! LOL
I wonder if I need to find a new home for this thing and my Ansellia africana that is supposed to get huge too. *sigh* Research better before you buy is the moral of this story.

I have had one for about 4 years, it's healthy and grows new canes from time to time, but no flowers yet. I think I may need to repot it but I'm a bit scared in case I kill it. How do I know when I absolutely have to repot it? (I did buy a second one a couple of months ago, sort of as insurance, but am possilbly going to regret that if they both reach full size...)

When in doubt, it is better to repot. Check the roots to make sure you do not have rot (especially at the center of the root ball.

... I just bought a baby at the last society meeting... I was soooooo fooled! The grower told me " about two yeard to bloom"... Well, it's not a new born baby at least... It might be about couple years old. It has appx 5 bulbs but is very little in 2" pot.
Gin, how is your doing? How big it is now?
