I think light and temperature contribute to better flowers. My friend gave a phal to care for him last July because she is afraid she will kill it. I repot it to s/h, and put it on a south west window, and with supplemental lighting at night. In Nov, the orchid sent out a spike, so I gave it back to her. Meanwhile, my other phals were also sending spikes. But my apartment is very hot in the winter, so my phals were racing to put out flower. I end up only getting 2 to 6 flowers on each spike, and the forms were not great. But my friend's phal was just taking time to grow that spike, and in April, it put out 14 flowers. She set the temp in her house at 68F/74F for night/day, and the plant was by a south facing glass door. My phals got root rot in s/h in the winter, hers was thriving in the same media. I am convinced her house is more suitable for phals (she lives in NJ), and my apartment (in Manhattan) is more suitable for catt.
