That is a great idea that might work for my suffering Phals. I have tried sphagnum on top of larger orchiata. Some like some not so much. Cant wait to try your method. Yes, I have another question, how often do you water when under lights?

My phals are potted in a layer of sphag on top of a layer of LECA that I add to each pot for weight, drainage and air flow. All of my plants are grown indoors on the window sill but mostly under or near lights. The phals are in a well lit room and approx. 5-6 feet from a LED lamp.

WTG!
Are you using regular plastic pot or hydroponic pot?
Water/feed every 7-10 days in summer, 10-14 days in winter and will let the sphag dry out completely between waterings. Very little heat put out by the LED's, more variation in room temperature from the sunlight coming in from the south facing window.

Regular plastic pots, holes in the bottom to allow drainage.
