    Default Dendrobium 'babies' in flasks

    Hi all,
I have just been on a visit to Bali, where I visited the Bali Orchid Gardens near Denpasar before my departure. I bought two flasks of Dendrobiums which apparently will be ready to pot up in two months. The lady said 'once the nutrient had been used up'. One flask looks like it will be ready before that.
Can anyone give me some info from here? I go home to Zimbabwe early Oct where it's hot and dry at the moment till the rains start mid November.
I envisage finely chopped pine bark and/or coconut husk (IF I can find this latter) with charcoal, in individual small pots to begin with....am I going in the right direction?
They are Dendrobium verninha x Dend helix pomeo brown
and Dend discolor x Dend helix pomeo brown

    Congrats Lin very interesting crossing:
What you need to once you already back to your own country
    1. Put the flasks away from strong light
    2. Acclimatize for at least 1 to 3 weeks
3.Than you can remove all the seedlings from the flask
    4. Wash thoroughly and remove all the agar residue
5.Keep them moist for a week in a small compotes
    6. The seedlings is prone to develop rot just observe accordingly
    7. Monitor them, hardening of the leaves actually is a good sign
    8. You can spray light inorganic fertilizer once a week.
Good luck and all the best. So far I did for my Brachypetallum very little casualties.

By the way you can put over the thin layer of sphagnum moss or over the charcoal.

Thanks SO much Zainal. I will let you all know how I get along! This is a first for me.
I will have to watch them as our weather is v hot and v dry right now! I need to see if anyone back home has some sphagum moss, or else I try to get some here in Europe while I am here. Lin

Expanding a bit on that excellent advice above, keep in mind that the plants have been in a 100% RH environment for their entire lives, so keeping the humidity up upon deflasking will be critical.

I have alway placed the community pots in individual plastic bags that are kept closed for a week, then only open for an hour a day for a week, then two hours a day for a week, then two hours twice a day for a week, then left open. If I see any signs of drying, I can close them again, but usually, after a week like that, they are ready to hit the greenhouse. In your apparently dry conditions, I'd be more wary.

Excellent. This is what was worrying me - the DRY heat we have until the rains start. Thanks a lot!
