Cattleya Jungle Spots
I bought this plant at a local show a couple of weeks ago, in bud. A few other guys were looking at it, and speculating about it - they all thought it was a made-up name, and wondered about the spots. I thought it was probably a guttata or something similar cross, and decided to risk it, as I like the heavy waxy texture and general appearance of this kind of cattleya.
Unfortunately the buds are all over the place - badly presented ; perhaps the trader had just bought it in himself and it has been in many different positions as the buds developed - should be better next year in this respect. I have already repotted it, as new roots were just breaking out.
I have researched it - the name is true, but the parentage surprises me ; it is actually aclandiae x bicolor, back-crossed onto aclandiae. Which of course does account for it.
I think the flowers will be long lasting.
It has been awarded , in a clone "Golden Leopard: (HCC/AOS) where the white in my flowers is replaced with mustard yellow - maybe these will change as they age. That award was for a spike of 3 flowers, over 9cm across - as you may be able to work out, my plant has 4 per spike, but smaller - 7cm.
