How to prevent monkey from tearing down outdoors orchids

Hi All,

I have a friend who just moved to a new house and was having problems with monkeys breaking his dendrobium pseudobulbs.

Anyone has any idea how to prevent them other than building a cage or greenhouse for the orchids?

Try sprinkling the pb's with dried blood. I don't have a monkey problem but it works great for squirrels. You should be able to get it at garden supply stores. It will act as a nutrient so don't apply too much.

This is truly an international forum! Monkeys vs squirrels - wonderful! Anyhow, between the rains put out the hottest chili pepper in a perimeter around the collection. That even works for tough Baltimore squirrels. Rattling/reflecting aluminum foil pieces on a string works for squirrels but monkeys probably figure that out in 5 min or less. I'm sure people like Zainal Abidin, for instance, can suggest something good.

And I thought having little snakes in my baskets was an issue...monkeys? So glad that isn't an issue here in Florida!

That was the most difficult part at one time people tend to use "Wether Oil" how effective I'm not that sure currently in Malaysia people talk about another cream/gels/oil under the brand" Kerimo" was told that the smell like tiger piss. Maybe you can order online I'm thinking to buy one later.

Hahaha...thanks everyone for the input. I was having fun with this topic. Well, i didnt expect Zainal faces similar issue...and im wondering whether my friend will scold me if his whole garden will smell like tiger piss..hahaha. Anyhow, i will suggest to him.

I just love that... How dangerous is it to become familiar with that smell I wonder ?

Maybe there are some advantages in living in a cool Northern temperate climate ! No tiger piss for a start....

I'm sure that synthetic tiger piss should work. I remember when I was a boy (about 70 years ago) we had problems with water buffalos ( the domestic Asian ones used for ploughing padi fields) that strayed into our compound. We had about an acre of banana trees and the buffalos kept destroying quite a lot of them. We tried chasing them away - a scary thing to do as they weigh close to a ton with horns longer than a man's arms - but they would stand their ground and look menacingly at us. One day, a neighbour suggested we use tiger oil derived from boiling the fat of a tiger to scare them off. To cut a long story short, the same neighbour supplied us with a small amount of the oil a few days later. He dipped 4 or 5 small pieces of rags (the size of 2x4 like the ones for cleaning gun barrels) tied to end of of short sticks which he stuck into the ground at strategic places around our banana plot, The result was hilarious....the next time a herd of around 6 buffalos ventured into the banana plot there was a mad stampede to get out after just a few minutes . That was the end of the buffalo menace. I kid you not.

Since this is a Malaysian story, all (?) Malaysians know how much monkeys, especially macaques hate 'belacan',. I wonder if pieces of belacan placed in the orchid growing area would deter the monkeys.
