Default Garage Sale Dendrobium with 16 keikis

Got this dendrobium at a garage sale. Wasnt sure what it was, but it had like 13 canes, and I thought it was getting ready to bloom, but the nubs I saw were all keikis, 19! I thought something must be wrong, so I repotted it, lost 3 keikis, and I realized it was partly potted in soil, and the soil was covering up another 8-9 canes that had been cut down and buried in the soil, So the roots were bad but amazingly there were still a few good ones, I removed those because they were rotten and the rhizome snapped in two, so there were like 7 canes on each half. I put a little cinnamon on where it snapped and potted it up in bark mix. My question is....what now? There are all these keikis, which I am worried are killing the plant...but I am not sure the plant will live anyway. Should I remove them now? Should I just keep trying to care for it and see what happens? It does look like it may be putting out a new growth at the bottom though...

One of the keikis is in bud and it looks like it will be a pretty pinkish purple dendrobium, no idea what the name is or anything...

Would appreciate any advice or direction you could give me.

Give the keikei's time to develop roots. When each keikei has a good two or three inches long roots you can snap it off the parent pbulb and pot them up in their own little pots. I recommend you use spagnum moss until they are around a year old, then you can get rid of the spagnum and use the small bark mix that says it is for Phalaenopsis. Only use as large a plastic pot as you can fit the roots into. You will not believe how hardy Dendrobiums are. I was given a few about 6 years ago and I figured I would kill them. Mine ALL made it and now bloom like old pros. I hope your bunch end up growing and doing well for you. It is a joy to see something you know started out tiny and made it to bloom. Best of luck...

Oops, almost forgot. I have seen several people on here take a small clump of sphagnum and wrap it around the base of the keikei so it will encourage the roots to grow faster. I've never tried it, but then i'm in humid Florida.

ok great! I was just so worried that I would lose the mother plant. I am happy to have the keikis, but I would much rather have a larger plant. If you would like one, let me know!

Hi Michelle this is soft cane Dendrobium basically is Dendrobium nobile hybrid well you can follow the instruction by Connie or you can keep the keikies first for about another 4 to 8 weeks. Is easy plant to grow and flower under your atmosphere. All the best.

For nobile hybrid keikis, i pot in well washed coarse perlite topped with rock chippings, and stand in ½ inch water - popularly called semi-hydroponics. They sometimes flower i under a year, and if well grown, the new canes get taller and taller each year, taking perhaps 5 years to give a plant as big as the parent. But put a fewin each pot, you get to a big plant that much quicker.
