Hi. I bought this no id cattleya yesterday and I would like to ask if do I have to repot it now because I saw two small crawling insects in the pot and the medium seems very old or wait for the keikis to grow bigger? I read that you have to repot a newly purchased orchid but I am afraid to do it because I might damage the roots of the keikis and they will die. Please help me. Thank you in advance.

Hi, BD. Thank you so much for your help. Good afternoon. Hello zainal and catttan.
Media looks broken and better to repot now.
Thank you ksriramkumar.
I would agree, repot!
Look at it this way: you could repot the orchid now, risk a little root damage and guarantee that your new cat has clean, parasite free media and KNOW that it will make it (in which case you are just careful with the roots of the keiki), or you could wait to repot it until the keiki is more mature, by which time the acidic media or whatever you've got crawling in your bark has gobbled up your roots and harmed the mother plant. Remember that it's not uncommon for plants (especially orchids) to send off keikis or clones when they're under stress as a last ditch effort to reproduce. I concur with those above. Best repot!
Thank you JDT.

Okay, I got it. Thank you so much orchidems.
Personally I would not. I never repot cattleyas until I can see a flush of new roots starting, and then repot immediately.
IMHO the damage - unavoidable- exceeds the risk.
Which goes to show that if you line up a dozen orchid growers and ask them all the same question you will always get at least two different answers.
You pays your money, and takes your choice.
Hi, Dorsetman. Yeah, it has a new root growth. I already repotted it. Thank you for your reply.
