    Default Phalenopsis with floppy leaves

    Hi all,

I purchased an NOID Phalenopsis (looks like Sogo Yukidian) 2 weeks ago from the bargain bin some time ago. It was potted in rotted sphaghum moss and in a plastic sleeve pot with 2 flowers remaining. I selected it as there were some viable roots visible through the plastic sleeve. There was some mechanical damage on the plant but it didnt seem to be diseased and was pest-free.

I trimmed off the mushy roots and repotted it in a clay orchid pot in 1/2 charcoal and 1/2 fresh sphagnum moss. The moss stays moist for about 2-3 days before it needs watering. However the leaves seem to be getting quite floppy, although they are still green without signs of sunburn. I checked the roots by removing some of the sphagnum and they seem quite green/white and rigid. I did not notice any new root growth, however.

The plant is currently located by a window and receives direct morning sun until 12 noon. I have placed it in the shade of another sun-loving orchid however so the direct sunlight is somewhat dappled. I'm located in Singapore so temperatures here average about 27-30 degree Celsius and humidity about 70-80%. The plants get quite a bit of air movement (frequent light breezes). The rest of my (novelty) phals (Violacea and cornu cervi) are doing quite well, spiking and flowering.

This plant was previously housed in an air-conditioned shop interior. Should I just put the floppiness down to the plant adapting to my environment or should I make some changes to the medium/watering/etc? Thanks!

Update: The plant is putting out some new roots under the sphag but still looks limp and floppy as ever so I guess it is ok. Weather has been beastly hot lately so I guess it is just suffering like the rest of us here

As long as it's deeply shaded and humid, "beastly hot" is great for phals.
