Probably only hardy in UK in a very small part of the country. Has big leaves of course - up to 8 inches across at the top of the tree, so transpires a lot of water. Often it suffers and drops its leaves, or some, but this year I have a cunning plan ; I run my RO machine and colect the good water for my orchids, and collect the "bad" water first for my dahlias and a few other choice plants, then let the overflow run to the base of this (Indian Bean Tree , is the popular name) and kit keeps it going. Such a sight, and such wonderful flowers too .
The lower branches sag, in the summer , which is common to man y things, so it gets an annual prune to keep walking height below it. But nice now when the flowers are eye level.

Always liked this one. Hardy in my area
Stunning plant, and the sitting area is about the same!
We call it the “cigar tree” around here, after the seed pods. I’ve always admired them but people don’t seem to plant them very often.
The biggest use of catalpas (aka Catawba) in the southeast US is for gathering the sphinx moth caterpillars that live on them, as they are excellent fish bait.
Beautiful tree. I like the huge leaves and light green coloring. The blooms are an added bonus to enjoy.
cheers,
