Patience! I've got 5 sheaths on one waiting to fill out myself. It takes awhile! And sometimes they may not produce a flower. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

All you can do is wait it out, there is a chance it will never develop but you never know!

It is always great to look forward for some exciting thing to develop, such as the sheath filling up. It should - in general - develop. If it does --- fantastic. If it doesn't, then that's fine too, because eventually -- this year, or next year it will make it. As long as the plant looks and stays strong, then it will likely turn out great --- maybe this year, or next year. The fact that it developed a sheath is a good sign anyway --- regardless of whether it gets a flower this time or not. But fingers crossed. Sometimes better to not anticipate or think too much. Just got to be patient --- long term patience.

Do you have an hybrid, or an species? The species of cattleya will determine the flowering pattern. Some cattleyas flower from a green sheet, and some do from a dry sheet. And, that is useful to differentiate between C. guttata and C. leopoldii. Some flower as the sheet is growing, and some wait months before the flower emerges. The worst case is a blank sheet. Some cattleyas like the C. Warscewiczii need a set temperature to send the flowers, so in many places in the South the temperature does not go low enough to set flowers, so you will get a blanks sheet every summer.
