    Default Orchid Seeds Storage

    Hi,

I have been reading on orchids seed storage. Some species under specific methods can be stored for decades, while others no matter what, won't last more than 3 months.

I'm a bit lost and I'm looking for some guidance on the best methods to store my seeds for the longest possible period of time.

Right now I have my seeds in the fridge at 5║C 50% with some silica gel bags inside a ziplock bag.

Any advice or recommended literature on this subject would be highly appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

Looks like your first post so welcome to the group.

I am not into storing seed so maybe some one else will be able to help you.

I wrap seed in paper towel, labelled and store in an airtight container in the Fridge. This has worked well for me. Yes some seed have a very short shelf life, many Angreacum species lose viability after 3 months. Cattleyas for example last a few years, I have just sown Cattleya seed that was 7 years old with good germination.

In my experience paper towel releases small dust like particles and disintegrates easily while scraping the seeds, in my opinion it adds extra vectors of contamination. I prefer to use smooth surface paper, like lenses paper or filter paper.
What I find most complicated about orchid seed storage is that the ideal conditions vary so much regarding each specie. I read Phaleanopsis last maximum 6 months whatever method you use to store them....
