    Hi Perl,

    Check out this article: http://www.rv-orchidworks.com/orchid...um-orchid.html

Also, this video, though it is repotting a dendrobium keiki, should help as well in regard to potting medium.

    cheers,
    BD

He said coconut in the video for the last item in the mix but the screen says charcoal and I'm sure he meant charcoal; I always add charcoal to my mixes as well.

I have a number of dendrobiums that are due for re-potting. They are all under growlight tables in front of my apartment's windows that face south. I live in New York City.

It is now almost October. I have read that they should be repotted heading into the spring growing season. Any reason to not repot them now!

Also, should I water them after re-potting or leave them dry for a number of weeks?

Lastly, when is it time to begin fertilizing them?

    Thanks,

    alanbar

Always repot when new roots have started and wait at least a day to water.
That said I have repotted dendrobiums in the Spring when I had the time assuming they would be starting a growth spirt and they did fine.

I hope that I'm not hijacking this post, but since we are on the topic of repotting unruly roots... I was wondering how people deal with plants that produce new shoots higher and higher up from the pot. I have a laelia and a few other catts, Blc., that will not stay in a pot... I thought about potting it so that the newest growth would be in the potting media, but then the old ones stick out.

Think about mounting such plants perhaps, if you have a spot you can keep them watered sufficiently.
I've heard people plant them "sideways" also so the older growths don't get buried...never tried that myself.
Laelia anceps mount (not my mount I bought this way) Second picture shows spike that I just noticed.
Ignore the dead Angraecum in the photo.
