I see my picture came thru after all! the brown areas are indented but not soft or moist. The circlular markings inside the brown area are what made me wonder if it's a virus.

    ...anyone?

People can speculate if it is a virus or not, but the only way to know for sure is to test it. Testing kits are available or tissue can be sent to a testing lab. The kits are relatively inexpensive. If it's a valuable or a favorite plant it may be worth pursuing testing. If not, it may be better to discard or at least separate far from other plants to be safe.
