    Default Orchids and intense heat

    Dear all,
I am fearing the arrival of Summer.
Italy is now fully sub-tropical, with temperatures from June to September going from 35 to 40, even 42 some days...
    Any suggestions? Strategies?
I have Catasetum, Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium, Oncidium and Dendrobiums...
They are in front of the window taking full light from 10 AM to 16 PM, with white linen blinders, but I am afraid the Sun will burn them even through the blinds!
    Thank you

    Monica

    Ciao, Monica!

Except maybe for the cymbidium, I don't see the heat being a terrible problem by itself, but you definitely want to keep them shaded.

In terms of "brightness tolerance", I'd guess the dendrobium to be most tolerant, followed by oncidiums, with the catasetums and phals the least tolerant.

It is difficult growing indoors. Here in England I don’t expect any problem except for a month or too in high summer, and growing in a greenhouse solely devoted to orchids I can ( and do) run hygromifiers, and a portable air conditioner unit too. I reckon that most my orchids will stand 35 occasionally, but 40 is too much.
Apart from which, the growing rate speeds up, as the temperature approaches 30, and the slows down again . A graph of growing rate v temperature shows the classic bell curve..

Ciao Dorsetman, yes, it is unbearable also to humans. People deny climate change, but here is so evident... plants and animals are thinking it is spring, 14 -18 Celsius degrees in December...
Will an air conditioning system help? I never feared the Sun before in my life, but now...
