Way back in the day , when I were but a lad ( as they say) there was Odm bictoniense, and also Odm rossi. the first one had spikes of lots of flowers, maybe 20 or so, but not much above an inch across. rossii was a much smaller plant, with a spike of 5 (?) not many, anyway, rather larger flowers. ( why do some names have one 'i' and others two , I wonder ? - some latin rule I suppose...)
The two crossed together made Odm Bic-ross ( not very imaginative, whoever named that ) and it wa hard to find, and even harder to keep alive.
But crossed back on to bictoniense, it produced Violetta van Holm. Mid way in flowers - 10 as seen here is a good result, but even a poor result is maybe 8. Much bigger flowers than either parent , too.
I have several plants, but bought this extra one at the last show I went to , since I try to buy something from every trader who attends, to keep them coming. That's my excuse anyway...
It's a better plant than I have grown lately, but of course ( of course, I always say this, and always believe it) my culture will be so much better this year for one reason or another. Maybe it will even be true sometime.

Some of the flowers seem to have an extra petal ! Must study this a bit closer when I go back into the greenhouse. I don't like freaks.

Not my strong suit, scent. With most orchids I don’t even try.

I liked how it arranges itself in the picture. It's must be so relaxing viewing it in my home if only I have it.

I looked close.not a freak. It was simply seeing parts of two flowers which looked as though they were one.

I was looking at the photo trying to see what you meant! haha... I think it is lovely, Geoff. Thanks for sharing it. AND, I love your practice of buying from each trader who attends the show to keep them coming back.

    cheers,
    BD
