Just a quick lighting question. I generally have these 2 orchids hanging in my tree. I don't think they've been getting enough light creating low flower production. I took them and hung them where they got some direct sunlight - about 4 hours throughout the day. The leaves turned purple after a few days. So I put them back under the tree and within a day the leaves were green again. If they turned purple was that too much sun? And how did they turn green again so quickly or even at all?

I have several plants that get a purple blush to them Sheryl.
I don't think it hurts them and may actually help them bloom better.
The rub here is they are NEVER in direct sun at all. Bright light, yes but no direct sun at all.
Is there a spot where they can be just out of direct sun for most of the day? As long as you keep an eye on them and they don't burn, I'd think they were fine.

It's interesting they reverted to green so quickly and I'd take that as a sign they were probably just fine and no where near being damaged. Over a longer exposure though and that might be different.

I believe that they are fine when they turn purplish-red. We have plants that do that just before they start blooming. Just avoid direct sunlight or you will likely see burns on the leaves.

Thank you gentlemen! I'll try a different area if I can find one in between the 2 conditions I've tried.

Try gradually moving them to the brighter light not all at once, you need to give them some time to adjust to that extra light. Some orchids that get that purple color on the leaves it is not good, some that they will have no problem with it.

Correct acclimatization is important to prevent sun burn, I also have the same effect but gradually will disappear after put under the shade, bright light is important to induce bud formation.
