Wink Not an orchid, but pretty...

So, this year in my garden I decided to plant some sunflowers. I've never grown them before, but had some bird seed and thought - why not??! So, I researched and read that I needed to soak the seeds over night in water before planting. I did so and planted one row of flowers. Well, every seed came up! I had another empty row on the other side of the fence panel that I put in to support my tomatoes and planted a bunch more sunflower seeds - this time without soaking. They all came up too. Now the plants are starting to bloom with multiple flowers. I'm so happy. I think the birds will love these.

These are black oil sunflower seeds. Anyone know how long it takes the seeds to mature and turn black in the flowers?

    Cheers,

Sunflowers are so summery. I remember growing some in California when I was young. My recollection is that you leave the flowers until the heads dry out and the seeds start to loosen. Then you can harvest. At least that is how I did it.

You can have sun flowers sprout as Salad Bruce.I did the same this year in my planter.mine are mini sun flowers, they bloom a little late because I cut 2-3 times to make them branched so I can have more flowers

Maturity should be about 100 - 120 days from planting, but obviously there is some variability because not all flowers open together, and it will depend on how hot your summer has been. They won't spoil if they stay on the plant longer unless conditions are very wet so there's no rush to harvest unless the birds and squirrels are getting them before you do.
