I have a mix of mounted and potted - I hate to say this but some days (when I have too many pet sitting clients), I get lazy/busy, and let the mounted ones hanging over the potted ones drip down into them thereby eliminating the need for watering the small pots. I haven't experienced any more success (or failure) of the mounted over potted - both doing about the same. HOWEVER, in my situation (mini G.H. environment), mounted orchids give me more flexibility for placement and space/has it it's advantages over the potted for those reasons.

The very first time I remounted an orchid, I made a mistake that I never made again: I wanted to make sure it stayed on the mount so I tied it up pretty tightly - TOO tightly....so tightly, I killed off many of the roots. Don't make the same mistake I did

Here is the mount I did last year on fiber...the mini-catt has 6 blossoms, heavily fragrant!! Both the catts and their bunk-mate phals seem to love being on fiber, as their roots twist and twine inside and outside. Downside is I will never be able to separate them!

    ---------- Post Merged at 05:58 PM ----------

I have found mounted orchids to be more likely to bloom profusely and hold blooms for more than three months especially phals

    ---------- Post Merged at 06:02 PM ----------

I am a bit cautious of hanging another valuable orchid underneath because the dripping on the leaves below causes a problem sometimes to the bottom orchid, fungus, I saw that happen to someone and they lost the orchid

I am a firm believer in Appropriate Technology...hence my dry-cleaner wire hangers recycled into fir-bark hangers! They can be hooked over other hanging pots or over hooks on the wall.

Here's my latest endeavor...my neighbor threw out some old screening from his lanai. I appropriated some to "sew" into "pots" with heavy fishing line. Stuffed in the plants with wet sphagnum to keep them moist. My pygmy date palm's trunk has natural hooks on which to hang them. I can move them around until the roots start coming out to embrace the tree--then I leave them for the summer and by the time it's over, the screening will have decayed and the phals will have grown onto the tree trunk. Appropriate Technology strikes again!
