My newest acquisition

Dendrobium laevifolium.

Dendrobium laevifolium is a compact, miniature species native to New Guinea it is in the oxyglosum group but is easier to grow and will tolerate warmer temperatures and somewhat drier conditions than most varieties in this group. The plant is compact with smooth shiny leaves flushed in red-purple. The flowers emerge from the base of the pseudobulb or sometimes from the top between the leaves. They are long lasting and colorful.

Dyakia hendersonianum, it is in spike.

This miniature orchid was once classified as an ascocentrum, but unlike its vandaceous cousins it doesn't require bright light. The flowers are plentiful, bright pink with a white lip and a spur! This warm growing, fragrant species can bloom anytime and flowers twice a year with clusters of flowers being larger than the plant itself.

How long is the spike in the second photo? Will you grow the Dyakia in some sort of contained environment (that is, with high humidity?) Or is it tolerant of less humidity?

Julie, the Dyakia was placed in a pot with the mount when I got it.. I place it in my humidity tent, the moss on the mount dries out in 2 days. I read on another orchid forum that people usually grow it in high humidity. The spike is about 4" long, and it looks like it will grow longer.

I figured it would want more humidity. When I see the word "vandaceous" I smile and stop considering whether I should get one. Too dry here in the winter!

Hey Qing. I have both of those and mine look exactly the same. Very excited to see them grow!
My Dend bloom is opening but not open yet. I have 2 others. It blasted a few buds.
We have the same taste... :c)

Hey Kirsti, glad we are on the same boat. I am getting attracted to all these cute little minis. I think I am going to trade or give away all my space hogs. I am building my automatic irrigation system in my office, if that works out OK, I will make another on at home.

Tindo, the Dyakia is pretty hot in the vendor site where I bought, it is gone now from their catalog.
