First of all...white roots are normal. Roots that are growing have green or red tips.

I'm new to orchids. I recently purchased an orchid with no tag, I think that is referred to a NOID orchid, at a work fund raiser. It had no blooms or buds, but the leaves were very healthly looking. A nice green color, nice texture, rigid standing up on their own. It was in your standard 4" green store pot. So I bought it for $3. I looked up on-line about repotting and I got one of those orchid pots that has the holes all over the sides which is 5 1/2" in diamater, as well as some orchid bark that also has some styrafoam like stuff mixed in it. (I don't thinks its vermaculite). Okay, so I follow the instructions on the bag and re-pot the orchid. I noticed that the roots were all white. Not translucent, but just white, but since I don't know anything about orcids, I feigured that was normal. Anyway, I potted the plant and gave it a good soaking like the instructions said. I've been misting it with water ever few days and giving it a little drink every week or so. Nonetheless the leaves are starting to look leathery. I think I'm not watering it enough and the roots are still white. My gut tells me that the roots shouldn't be white. Can anybody advise me? I know it's harder not knowing what kind it is. Oh, by the way, it sits on my desk facing west so it gets bright light. Thanks for any advise anyone can give.
