    Default A New Contest!

    Okay boys and girls...

Halloween is coming, but not soon enough, so we need a contest to hold us over until we can go begging strangers for candy.

The prize is an orchid: a division of Mediocalcar decoratum, also known as the candycorn orchid. Seasonal! It's a mini, native to New Guinea, that enjoys cool moist conditions, and its flowers are long lasting. I also think its foliage is attractive. Perfect for our vivarium fanatics! Note - this is not my photo.

Recently, our dear Tim-O was bemoaning he didn't have a cool nickname on the forum. I think he was jealous of Doc Spock. So the contest is to see who can come up with the best nickname and matching avatar for Tim! Feel free to ask Tim any questions you need to, as the nickname should be appropriate. Tim will decide the winner! Anyone can play, but obviously I can only ship the plant within the U.S. So foreign entries will be playing for prestige and bragging rights.

Come on, let's dress up Timmy for Halloween!

I can tell by the flood of PM's I've been receiving on this contest that this will be a popular one...but many - particularly our newer members - don't know enough about Tim to know where to begin.

Tim lives in Australia, loves good wine, beer too I think, and orchids. Paphs are his fav. He swoons if a post even mentions Paph. philippinense, and wets himself if a photo is included. He's also big on Aussie species.

Diane met him on a trip over to OZ, but the snorter in her story is all I can remember from that trip...

Tim, why don't you help out here and provide a little more color for everyone to work with.

Don't forget - he needs a nickname, but also an avatar to go with it! We'll run this for two weeks and see what entries we have by Oct 15th.

woo hoo... I'm gonna be famous.. or in-famous....

so, y'all can ask me anything you like...

but for starters... been growing orchids for ages... hmm over five years for sure... and still in the novice class (I reckon it's the stiff competition and not my growing skills... after all they grow... just never seems to flower :P )

I live in good ole Sydney town, capital of the Southern Hemisphere!! Ok, ok... it's in Australia. I share my house with two very, very naughty but very loveable German short-haired pointers and their other dad... and of course, the almost 400 orchids (not counting the flasks and recently deflasked seedlings).

currently obsessed with Australian Idol... which is like American Idol.. but better (are them fightin' words?) hehehe

as you can probably tell, I'm just a little off center of sanity, but that's a good thing right? right???

What kind of music do you like Tim? Also, McJules said something pretty personal about you and paph. philippinense--is it really true?

Music... I love music which means at any given time there is something playing... like at the moment, I'm listening to Russell Watson "Nothing Sacred". In the car, there was Macy Gray's Best of Album. And in the lounge on the three CD player are Janet Jackson, Destiny's Child and Justin Timberlake.... the opera La Rondine by Puccini must have been playing sometime last week as it's still lying next to the player.

As for Paph philippinense... well let me do it this way... here are some of my Paphs:-

Chiara ‘Viva Verde’ x philippinense var aureum ‘Hamana Angel’
Delphi (philippinense 'Doll' x delenatii 'March')
Hamana Hooknes (hookerae ‘L.L.’ x philippinense ‘Jen’)
Honey (philippinense x primulinum ‘Golden Glow’)
Honey 'alba' (primulinum album x philippinense album)
Kemp Tower (philippinense ‘OZ’ x Prince Edward Of York ‘Golden Boy’)
    Lebaudyanum (haynaldianum x philippinense)
Memoria Dave Myhre (hirsutissimum var esquirolei x philippinense)
    Michael Koopowitz (sanderianum x philippinense)
    Millmanii (callosum x philippinense)
Millmanii (callosum ‘Giganteum’ x philippinense var roebelenii ‘Twister’)
Mount Toro 'alba' (philippinense ‘alba’ x stonei ‘alba’)
Moustache (Saint Swithin 'Maxie's Pride' x philippinense var roebelinii 'Winter')

    philippinense ‘In-charm’ x ‘Ween Sin’
    philippinense ‘OZ’ x ‘Multi SC#1’
    philippinense ‘Palawan’
