So you skipped compotting most of them. Interesting. I've lost a couple of the Phrags I deflasked, but not too many. I'm having a bit more trouble with Phal fasciata seedlings that I deflasked. Some are fine, but some aren't happy. I think there's a higher mortality rate with flasklings than mature plants. Almost like the weaker seedlings die off - only the healthiest survive and the little planties sort it out themselves.

How big are your devil fires now McJ? We should do a comparison to see how the babies are growing for people.

Yes. Most seemed too big for compotting by the time I got to deflasking them. I did make a few compots with the wee little ones. For the most part they seem to be doing ok.

Ever bought a plant that does nothing ? I am a firm believer these are the weaker plants from the beginning that we end up buying . I think it is best if they croak off when little . Gin

I agree, that's why I haven't given my flasklings any special treatment. Haven't had any die off yet, so either I got some really good flasks, or they're tougher than we think.

    Hi B. Dreamer,
    2 questions for you:
    - You use oyster shell for what? to provide calcium.
    - My flasks are almost 5 months and too crowded. Is it read to de-flask? I don't have LFH so I'm afraid of re-flasking.

    Hi!

I do use the oyster shell for calcium.

Orchids can grow a very long time in their flask. I kept ours in too long and they got big (see photos). Because of that, we skipped compotting most of this batch.

I am not sure what LFH means. Let me know and I will respond the best I can.

    Cheers,
    BD

    Thanks BD,
I will try oyster shell to see it's better or not; moreover it looks better with white oyster shell on the top. I don't have a Laminate Flow Hood (LFH) so I'm afraid of transfering from one flask to another will get contamination.

LFH ...oh! Okay, I just did not know what you meant. Best of luck!
