    Question Photo Software Help Needed

I don't have any photo manipulation software. I have never used any, either. I need to buy a program, but don't want to buy the wrong one, so I need advice from those of you who have used such programs. Which programs are worthwhile and which programs to avoid.

Well, in school I studied to be a graphic designer/page layout guy...so I gained some familiarity with some of the different software around. If you are looking to do solely photo manipulation, the standard is Adobe PhotoShop...Its pricey though. There are some scaled down versions of it, but they aren't really worth it. Its great not only because it has all of the nifty filters that people have a tendency to over use, but you can also do fine tuning as far as colour manipulation, your standard RGB (Red Green Blue), CMYK (Cyan Magenta Yellow + Black...that would be the K), duo tone...you name it you can do it. It also integrates nicely with programs like PageMaker (which I think they stopped making in favour of CS-aka creative Studio), Illustrator...also a standard in design, LiveMotion...the animation software, and GoLive which is their answer to Dreamweaver for design for the web. Quark, another page layout program also works quite nicely with PhotoShop...so, now I am done extolling upon the virtues of PS, there are many others out there which aren't as pricey, won't do quite as much, but if you are looking to do some simple photo editing there is PhotoSuite, PhotoFinishing Studio, the old but still viable PaintShop..most of them have red eye removal, some have transparency layers, yadda yadda yadda...it goes on.

PM me if you need some more info.

It totally depends on what you're trying to do.

You can take out a mortgage and buy Photoshop, but you'll spend the rest of your life trying to figure out how to make it work. It can do anything. But the manual is one of the worst I've seen. You can't figure it out, even if you're computer savvy.

Most cheapie programs do many of the basics and that's all most hobbyists require. If you're a professional photographer and want lots of subtle controls you'll need Photoshop and some training to learn it.

Most printers these days come bundled with some sort of photo editing software. That's usually all most people need. I'm not sure what Microsoft PictureIt is selling for these days, but that's not that hard to use and does most of what I require.

As I said, it depends on what you're trying to do.

The Gimp is a free photo program that does everything that PhotoShop does. "GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring." Click HERE to download it.

I want to be able to sort and store and some color manipulation and post pics on the forum. I've never done any of this. All my pics are on my camera a Kodak PowerShot SD 400. I had digital Canon before. I don't want a program that takes a computer technician to understand it. I had encephalitis in 1999 and was left with some cognitive difficulties and don't need a software program to rub it in my face.

    I didn't realize I hadn't enbled messages, I'll fix that.
