How do you manage roots during repotting?

I don't grow Catts or Phals, but I do bury aerial roots on my Brassias.

In this arid climate, aerial roots don't thrive, so in general, I try to bury roots if I can. I certainly try to guide new roots into the media. Just repotted a phal with an absurd amount of aerial roots; in this case I left quite a few out because that's what the plant was used to. I even trimmed some of the really long dangley ones--that was a first for me!

I try to leave the roots exposed as that is where the plant wants them.With aerial roots ,if they are buried they have a strong tendence to stop growing and the die.

I agree. Especially with phals, the aerial roots die when they are buried in the media, unless the media is very coarse.

According to all that I have read, aerial roots should be left in the air. I haven't read about Oncidiums, so no comment.

Overburing roots tend to lead to mushy leaves. You want some exposed. I Usually bury all but the silver roots. So far I have 129 orchids still alive and well.
