The only slippers I've had this issue with are Phrag besseae hybrids, I either bury the old growth to let the new ones root, or bend the stolons down and fix them in place.

I always bury roots... whatever the genus... mainly for aesthetic reasons, and secondly for ease of handling... ie if there's roots everywhere, I'm likely to tangle it with something else and have a whole bunch of orchids fall on the floor!
We always pot up as many of the roots as we can. Keeps things from growing to the bench or into each other's pots.

I leave phal roots out in the air. Every time I try to get them into the pot I break them.
I only have one phal and it has decided to be sure that I can't put its roots anywhere it doesn't want them: it grows them real fast into the air or into the pot, but where the root starts is where it stays. The air roots extent 5-10 inches straight out and still going.
I'm slowly repotting most of my epiphytes in clear pots... especially the Phals...
and even some of the Phrags... So far... the roots are behaving as wanted.
It make sense to me because in a natural habitat... most of the epiphyte's roots are 'out in the open' anyway.
