you are worrying too much. Just dont bury them half way up their pbulbs and you will be fine. Follow your instinct, everything will be good.

So since I have been repotting my brains out lately, how do you know if you have potted too high or too low? For say, catts, phals, whatever else you feel like writing about. These things grow on trees, why are they so picky?

phals are only picky if you get water in the crown or leaf axils in the late afternoon or nightfall. that's because in the wild, they grow on the sides of trees and excess water drains right out. which is why they're constantly trying to turn themselves upside down in pot culture.
for anything with pseudobulbs, you let the rhizome creep right at the surface of the media.
With a phal you can just "remember" the level where it was potted before you repot, and keep it at the same level when repotting. Phals should be potted with the lower leaves resting lightly on the pot rim. This means if any leaves are under the soil then it may be too deep. Phals potted too high may be wobbly/with roots showing/just look weird.
Other orchids with pbulbs, just don't bury them or make them so high that the whole bulb is up in the air. It's kind of hard to describe clearly...perhaps someone with more experience can chime in?!?
I don't know. What will happen if they are potted too low/too high? Will they suffer or something? These things grow on trees, why are they so picky?
Forrest had it right. I worry for a living.

ok BUT I did pot it too high. This is, for the most part, how it was potted when I bought it at our annual show but the leaves are way above the rim of the pot. Can I leave it that way? (Please say yes )
got a pic? easier to tell that way.
Long story....we are having computer problems so I can't post pictures until we get it straightened out. I can attach files, just can't upload so I guess that I'll have to wait until it is fixed.
One little thing as a practical matter: there are times when you do have to partially bury the the backbulbs--it won't hurt the plant--otherwise the next few growths will stair-step their way right out of the pot and throw roots everywhere instead of in the media, and a lot of your repotting effort will have been for nothing.
