Phal.javanica?

I ordered a phal.tetraspis, but when the little guy opened, it looks like this. Is it a phal javanica?

Well it certainly doesn't look anything like the Phal tetraspis images I have just googled. It does seem to look very like javanica....

Let's see what the experts ont he forum say (seeing as I am NOT one!)

Certainly a javanica! It's a great species, but not the tetraspis clone you likely paid dearly for. Your vendor will only relent if you're up to a lot of brow-beating. (Diane and Hoa remember my rampage when this same vendor screwed up an order for me.) You'll need to write a scathing letter to any response at all. Phone diatribes won't get you there.

While I love the javanica species, it's not nearly worth the cost of a tetraspis "C#1" clone. I'd be huffed up for a full frontal assualt to get credited the difference. They won't give you a thing for nothing, but definitely fight for the difference in cost, if you feel like the bother, and if you want to keep the javanica (which you should).

Thanks for the advice, Julie. Well I think I won't bother and will keep the javanica. The tetraspis cross in their website costs the same as the javanica. The C#1 clone of tetraspis is out of the market, I can't find it in any online cataloge within the US. Oh, I can't believe it is so hot.

I've seen a javanica before and this is definately it.
However I am unaware of the values of the different species, if one real expert could enlighten the rest of us..we'd definately know what we've paid for!

My understanding of the pricing game is it depends on the demand/supply relation. If a species is very rare and a lot of people want it (you can't believe how many species snobs out there), its price will definetely sky rock high. But if it is a common hybrid, it could be as cheap as a supermarket price.

The pricing on the Phal tetraspis isn't about the species at all. The species is highly variable. Some flower are all white. Some have red barring. The "C#1" cultivar is a clone with an exceedingly recessive trait where petals show dramatic combos of red and white, in huge blotches. A given petal/sepal might be half red, half white, and the next one reversed.

It's pricey, because it is so rare, even though it's a clone of the rare cultivar. As of last spring, tiny seedlings were selling for $75. According to Qing, you can't even find them now.

So it's not so much a species thing, as it is a hot new clone that everyone wants and is in limited supply. That always makes for higher prices. Don't pay too much for a species tetraspis, unless you're looking for this particular cultivar. And for those, expect to pay!

How irritating that you didn't get the one you asked for!! I know how that is. I agree w/ Julie- I'm always up for a good fight when it comes to the orchids that I just gotta have! LOL

I saw those photos in a Chinese forum (several people posted) and was told it is sold for more than HK$1000 in HK. I did see it was available for $75 in the US, but waited too long (beause of the cold winter). When I decided to buy, they are all sold out. Oh well, maybe the nurseries will stem clone them again since they so hot.
