S/H question

Ok I am going to take the plunge. I ordered my S/H stuff and should get it this week. The question I have is about the roots. I have some phals that have roots growing out the side slats and holes in the bottome of thier pots. The S/H method has a water reservior in the bottom of the pot. I would think that the roots would do great above the reservior but would grow right down into it. Sitting in the water don't they tend to rot and introduce the rot to the rest of the root or do they just stop growing down once they hit the water?

From my experiences if you put roots into the res they will rot , if they grow into the res they thrive.
I tend to put enough medium into the pot to just cover the res hole(maybe an 1 " higher) then put he plant in & juggle/snuggle the roots in so that none are actually in the res.
The roots will grow into the res & will be happy.

Thanks you. It's good to know they will do ok. I did look in the S/H section but didn't see an answer to this question. A lot of great information there though. I can't wait to get some of my plants in S/H and see if I can get the results some others have been getting.
