I have about 13 different Dens but have to say I am totally uniformed about the different types. It aggravates me that I do not know there are different sections unless I am not understanding the poll.

I had to vote for Latouria. They are beautiful and usual. But it was a close tie. I also love the Dockrillias, which are just plain unusual.

Hello Everyone,
I just purchased a dendrobium yesterday from a big box store. It has one cane with about 6 flowers, and 3 buds. It does look like a "Mother Theresa" quite lovely. This is my very first dend. It is actually growing in a coconut shell, with that inside a pot. I see very skinny roots on top of the medium, but I want to see the entire root system. As I stated... HELP!!!! I know very little about this type of orchid. I will send a couple of pictures ( if I can remember how). I would actually like to continue growing it inside of the coconut. I thought I might put it in a basket? Please someone.....help!!!

It looks just like one of my first three Dens which I purchased in a grocery store in September 2006.
Don't worry about the coconut stuff, just don't overwater. Let it grow for a while. Some of Dens are deciduous so don't freak out if its leaves start to get yellow and later drop off. I would not repot till March or April unless necessary. However, it looks like the plant might have got a fungal disease. In any case, it would not hurt to spray some fungicide, better a systemic.

I thank you for responding. Fungal disease? Oh No!!! Yesterday, I made a batch of the cinnamon,, dish liq, water, and let the dend soak for a bit, I read that this will take care of any critters. The mixture I made is supposed to treat fungal, plus a host of other things. What do you suggest I use? What is a systemic?
I feel so dumb.

I favor 'phalanthae'. I love to see Den. bigibbum with an arching/pendulous inflorescence. Also, I have one with branched inflorescences. I've never seen that in a hybrid dendrobium. They probably bred it out when they should have selected specifically for it.

I guess I'd have to say just Dendrobium. I don't think I've even heard of some of those other names on the list, shame on me. If I can KEEP my Dendrobium leucocyanum, that'll probably be my favorite and I'll consider myself lucky.

Kdennis 14, be careful with that cinnamon. It's good at killing fungus, but it's also very good at drying plant tissues. I've over done it with cinnamon before and killed a lot of roots on a Wilsonara. Now I only use it on leaves and pseudobulbs. Roots in particular are susceptible to dehydration.
