my orchid tree...

You may recall a few weeks or so ago I mentioned I was building an orchid tree. Well, anyway, it is spiking now. It was difficult to photograph because it is so large, so please forgive the bad photos.

The 'tree' itself is an old cedar heart from a fence that was taken down some time ago. I got it in Texas from my parent's place. It is about three feet tall (give or take a few inches). Mounted on it is the gigantic keiki from a NoID dendrobium that we got in Charlottesville some ten or twelve years ago. The dend was about 8 feet tall and still growing, so I cut the top off of one of the canes. This top had about 4 new plants growing on it. Anyway, long story short, I dug a hole in the corner of the gh, put the post it it, attached the dendrobium to the log with green wire, put some spag around the mass of roots against the log, and draped some live Spanish moss over the roots to cover the green wire. It now has five or six spikes on it! I am looking forward to the blooms.

I'd like to have somewhere to be able to grow orchids like this. In my conditions, I'm sure the other half would kill me for letting the orchid tree drip on everything!
