    Thanks so much....since getting into Cattleyas, I've had a big lack of good articles to show those buds and makes me feel alot better about a back-bulb I've been trying to save. Time to go look for active buds....

    what do you do in the last case -a pseudobulb with no more growing eyes but the roots are alive. is there any hope?

    What you do with the plant is a personal choice at that point.
    I know some people get attached to their plants and want to hold every bit of hope that the plant will be able to revive itself. But cattleya anatomy makes that impossible. The roots will keep the pseudobulb alive, but it will no longer be capable of propagating itself naturally.

    Unless there are some extraordinary measures, such as being able to mericlone from a pseudobulb tissue (is that even possible?) then the pseudobulb should probably be retired to free up bench space.
    It would probably be more beneficial as compost at that point - to serve the greater good.

    I actually have a cattleytona pseudobulb with no roots or growing eyes that has been sitting on top of LECA pellets for about 2 years now. It is still alive, but just sits there not doing anything.
    I keep it more as a novelty, more than anything else.

    how would you know the eyes of the pseudobulb are there pictures that i can see? I have cattleyas and some pseudobulbs with no leaves here... ooops sorry i just saw the pictures posted by john...
