    Default Neat spider & web

Found this beauty on my patio this morning. I've seen smaller ones in the shade house, so they're either young ones or males. Looked on the "web" & found out it's an "Argiope aurantia". From what I found, it looks like the only black & white ones are in Florida, others are black & yellow & have big bodies.

Cool web that one made. Looks like a big zipper. I visited my folks in Texas this past week and there was a big black and yellow one like this on their porch. My two nieces (15 & 10) and my nephew (7) would catch grasshoppers other assorted bugs and throw up into the web to watch the spider first bite and then spin into a web the paralyzed grasshoppers. I made them quit. I think that spider grew about twice its size while I was there. At that rate, it would start eating the cats next!

    Cheers,
    BD

ROTFL! I'm sure the spider loved your neices & nephew... and can't wait till they come back and visit again!

Creepy/cool spider you found ... I'll take one if it stays away from me and just eats the bugs. *shudder* Imagine walking into its web one night and having it crawl on me...

    Beautiful.

Last I remember reading, while scientists still aren't sure what the purpose of that "zipper" is, there was some speculation that it might actually help attract prey.

Is it weird that I've been scratching my back ever since I started reading this thread?
    Nice coloration though.

It happened to me! We have a garden spider that makes these big webs near our front door in autumn...for a few nights instead of making them up near the gutters she got creative and attached one end to the gutter and the other end to a bush on the other edge of the sidewalk! Its just in the area before the automatic porch light comes on....

...I don't walk first into the house anymore (without waving a large stick in front of me)

Cool looking spider you have though!
