    Default Paph Guessing Game

    Hi Folks,

Here's a little fun game we haven't done for awhile.

Below is a picture of an orchid and you will need to guess which one it is.

You can ask as many questions as you like within the thread, but send me your guesses by privates so that everyone gets a chance to have a go...

    ok, then start guessing

    Cheers

Hi Hoa, YES, it is a primary cross.

For those wondering what that means - when two different species of orchids are hybridised, this is considered a "primary cross".

Hoa, YES, one of the parents is from the Brachypetalum group of Paphiopedilums.

C'mon folks, you can't let Hoa do all the hard work.. ask away... there are no silly questions, only missed opportunities to learn more about our wonderful hobby!

Connie, Thanks for the kind words... isn't it amazing how much of that red has come through...

    cheers

    Hi Tim,

Well well... you need some paph-obsessed minds ... they might log in later tonight I hope!

I think I know the brachy parent now, but the other parent is the hard one ...

    Hi there, Tim-O!

    Good guessing game!

I'm with Hoa - the other parent is a toughie. But the first parent isn't a no-brainer. Is it Paph bellatulum?

    Hi Tim!

No guess here but I sure like that bloom. Pretty leaves too. It looks like a beautiful moth emerging from the cocoon. Gorgeous!

Good work McJulie! So, we seem to have got one of the parents, which is Paph bellatulum.

Now, I can tell you a couple of things about the other parent -
    1. it is a Paph
    2. is is a unifloral species, ie only one flower at a time (not multi or sequential)

Also, this is a named cross which was registered in 1895!!!!

there you go, hopefully that makes things easier.

    cheers
