Moth Orchid

Hi, I'm new here so I hope I am doing this right! I have a white Moth Orchid that has bloomed 3 times and each time it's through blooming I cut the stem down to a node and it blooms again. Problem is this time when I cut the stem the node was a little on the brown side instead of green. So instead of getting a new flower stem I have a new set of leaves forming. Now I'm not exactly sure what I should do now. There are no roots and I was wondering if I should cut the entire stem off or if it would be possible to start a new plant with the new leaves? This is my first Orchid and I just love it but didn't want to do anything else wrong. If it's possible to start a new plant with the leaves on the flower stem how would I go about it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to OrchidTalk! You have the start of a baby plant. Sometimes it takes a long while for these to develop roots. I have had a keiki (s) actually bloom (send up their own spikes) while still attached to the 'mother' plant. Be sure to continue to feed your orchid and leave it alone. The roots will most likely develop on their own over time.

Thanks for your quick response. Will the mother plant send up another spike to bloom? This is very exciting! I may have 2 Orchids soon!

Sometimes they do send up another spike. It all really depends on culture and the condition of the plant. Good luck!
