paph photo

Hi all.
Heres a photo of the paph now opened..
This was a very sad plant when i got it but years later it has 4 spikes with 2 to 3 flowers on each.I only have 2 recorded on the old list No's 33 & 40.Could it be one of them??.It has a veiny ribbed look to the pedals with the little off white tips.Any help??..John

Hi John,

the plant you have there is actually a Phalaenopsis.

this is a different genus of orchids to the Paphiopedilum, which are commonly called the slipper orchids because of the pouch/slipper shaped labellum.

I've looked at your list and the only Phalaenopsis I can see is 83. 83. Phalaenopsis Mitsuko Takasaki ‘Carmela’ x Tropical Pink ‘Pleiades’. Now I doubt this is the plant as it sounds like a very complex hybridised phalaenopsis like the ones you see on florist shops with either pink or white 'round' flowers.

To me the plant you have looks like the species Phalaenopsis pulchra. But you don't have it on your list... so either, you didn't add it to the list or it is the complex hybrid.

Hmmm....phal violacea perhaps? At least that is what the picture reminds me of. Does it smell nice?

It looks to me also like Phal pulchra.
But very well colored and nice one!

I agree..phal pulchra. However, there looks to be some color break in the flower (should we be concerned about a virus)?

I know that when catt flowers look like that I usually have them tested.

Hi all.
Thanks again for your abundant knowledge.
When I started with the first half of the collection I was quickly briefed on how many different orchids there are.This detered me a bit as to the time it would take to learn it all.I am more of a hands on than academic and it seemed like a lot of effort which I rue a bit now.
Tim, the second half of the collection didn't have a list.So there are about 150 here from that lot with no id at all.The previous owner made the first list.
To Bluefirepegasus, it does have a beautiful scent (Does that help to id it??).
As for a virus, I live in the country and would have to take it to a neighbouring orchid society to see if they could help.I might keep it seperate until them.Would any virus that affects this type attack any of the other types??

Hi John,
I don't think something wrong with your pulchra,
it's actually very usual coloring for this Orchid.
If you make a search for Phal pulchra pictures on internet
you'll see that many of them have same kind of coloration.
