Orchid bark is fir bark, usually from the Northwest. If that is a fir tree - I'm no botanist - then it could be used, but I think it may need to be thoroughly washed and dried. I would suspect that sap could cause problems.

Hello, I am brand spanking new to orchids. I have looked but as usual cannot find the answer so, Is this bark from the photos ok to use for orchids, it is difficult to find pre-packed on Rhodes but this is in abundance to collect.

I'm not a big tree person either, but that looks like a Pine tree to me....
I wouldn't use it....You would be better off using pebbles or some other kind of stone (I grow some catts in gravel!)
Ditto to Clints post the sap is not a good thing for roots , Lava rock , small pieces of broken pots , wine corks . The picture looks like a pine cone if so not bark . Gin
Hello many thanks for replies.
Will not use this BUT!!!!!
what about palm tree bark (just a thought as there are also plenty of those here)
I was wondering about the same thing. I can`t find orchid bark in stores here, and I heard that some people use bark from trees in their gardens. They put it in the oven first for a few minutes, I guess that eliminates any fungus or pests. If anyone knowes ANYTHING about this issue, please tell us! My Phal is about to rebloom, so I would like to repot after it finishes blooming.
Thanks!
I've seen a lot of South Florida growers attach orchids to palms. I think it might be a safe alternative....
Might I suggest finding an online vendor of orchid supplies and have a potting mix shipped to you. I am sure there must be vendors in Greece, if not there are in many European countries.
Contact an orchid society in Greece and I am sure they can direct you as well. I believe there is a society in Crete and most likely in Athens as well. Is there a society in Rhodes?
