Default The Dendrobium Gift That Keeps On Giving

This was a gift years ago from a lady who could not get it to bloom, though it seemed when I got it to be in good health. It is a noID, though I thought I saw it's likeness somewhere in years past. With four total spikes this is its best blooming year ever, but before the first spike grew up (actually in the spring I think) it started losing leaves. It has numerous pseudo-bulbs and had alot of leaves. Over the months it lost many of those leaves and is only in the last few weeks starting to replace those at a fairly rapid rate as the other spikes bloom. Go figure! If you know the name or habits of this Dendrobium please let me know. AL Name: Oncostele Catatante Pacific Sun Spots and Dendrobium NoID 014.JPG

I wish I could help you with a name...wow what a gorgeous dendrobium! I just love the purple in the throat...and if I ever find one with this color i'll be buying it. I am partial to dendrobiums...and yours is just off the charts gorgeous!

Love the dark center to this dendrobium. I also like the way you are growing in in a basket. Nice!

    cheers,

Thanks you guys. Connie, I certainly don't think this Dendrobium is hard to find. Your bound to come across it at one point or another. Bruce I have some Shrag. moss loosely placed around the roots in this basket. For people new to the hobby only put the moss loosely aound the roots if your going to use the stuff at all. The exception might be if its used to hold a little more moisture as a 'top dressing' with say a bark media below. Never pack the moss down. I know some commercial and expert growers will use the moss, others won't touch it. AL

Hi Al, Not 100% sure, but I have one of these and the Tag says Den. Chao Praya Sweet. Check it out and see how yours compares. I beleive that it is an Aussie Compact Den.
    Beautiful blooms. Good Luck.

There's an Australian species D. Affine (syn D. dicuphum), that is very closely related to D. biggibum which has that distinctive deep red throat with the white perianth segments. The perianth segments of wild type D Affine are not as broad.
Some selected forms of D biggibum ( but not the wild types) also have that patterning.
That is truly a stunning plant you have there. Congratulations

Angela: You are so right! It is Dendrobium Chao Praya Sweet! Thanks so much! I now have no more NoID's and I've changed the name on my computer list. It's nice to know who this 'chids' parents are. Harleymc, gosh it was a tough one. The Google images I saw for Dendrobium biggiburn are so close to Dendrobium Chao Praya Sweet it made it difficult to say the least. I would tend to believe that the cross would be more commercially accepted and propagated for sale even seven or more years ago. The lady who gave me this Dendrobium is in the States near here and she is not a orchid collector per say. Thanks everyone for the nice comments and help with this. AL
