On the strength of those pictures, I bought one last year in November. It was already crawling out of the pot, and the grower just wanted to get rid of it. I let it finish blooming, then separated it into 3 plants (at less than $10/each). All 3 are blooming now, and the results are stunning. Each flower is as big as a hand (well, a large woman's hand, let's say) and heavily fragrant. They've been blooming a month now, and the perfume is still strong! If you get only one catt, this should be a contender.

Gosh! I am so pleased that you are having such great success- my sincere congratulations! Your report really makes my day. I have recently expanded my Cattleya brotherhood collection, so more reports will be coming. But Grand Dragon will always be special- it is just stunning and it's nice to see how friends online also love it... and you are the Master, with your divisions growing so well and blooming.

A while back I had a disaster with my Grand Dragon- I was distracted and left it soaking too long, so it went black and I lost most of it. But the youngest bulb and lead survived and now it is steaming ahead and will soon be back on form. That was a close shave! I'm so happy I didn't lose my glamour girl! I would have been devastated. Our orchids can become real pets.

The message I sent was meant for you, my friend, as a reply to this- but I didn't attach it properly to your post. Sorry!

Well, Igor, I can't claim any expertise...these plants were tossed under the palm trees for the wet hot Florida summer, with no care at all. They rewarded me by producing full sheaths, and all the other catts and phals are in spike also! Thanks for pointing me to this wonderful catt.

Just gorgeous.... I'm on a spree of lusting for Cattleyas that won't fit in my growing area - what to do??

Cattleyas are annoyingly topheavy, especially in bloom. They take up a lot of space. I got tired of mine all leaning on each other like a bunch of drunks, so I put them in a big fiberglass urn. These Dragons are the same plant as my mid-Nov post, but now with two new spikes and a total of five flowers. There's another spike you can see in bud. (!) As for the rest of the crew, the phals reside in annual trays begged from a big box. If you double-nest the trays, they are strong enough to carry around 6 big phals. Very handy in these days of warm days and cold nights when they have to be shlepped in and out all the time. No more moving them two-by-two and having them keel over, breaking off tender new spikes!

Carol, what about a mini-catt? They have perfume, too.

I like mini-catts too. I do find my larger ones tend to grow better for me, they tolerate my errors more I guess! I have a couple of small catts though that are growing well. I guess I just need one that is vigorous, pretty and smells good! I love the floofy ones, but I also like the more sleek shiny ones. Way back when I was in college my parents had a Chocolate Drop. One day I am going to search one of those out and buy it, loved the rich color and it has nostalgic value.

I just love the rich color and large flowers on this one. Maybe if I lose a couple of plants I can just squeeze it in!
