I know Dressler moved a lot of Cattleya species to the new genus Guarianthe and I should identify this as Guarianthe bowringiana but I'm obviously behind the times.

This is a bowringiana hybrid, not bowringiana. The species bowringiana has funnel-shaped lips without prominent side-lobes (which in your plant, cover the column).

Li, you are right, thank you for your observation I missed. Obvious side-lobes obscuring the flower column on this one. Purchased this plant from an orchid collector about 3 years ago and it was not in bloom. I typically won't get an orchid without being able to see the bloom because of flower variability and quality but do love C. bowringiana and thought with this species shade/color of flower would be main characteristic I wouldn't know until it bloomed. Mislabeled orchid however. Now I don't know what this is other than probably bowringiana hybrid. I also have a beautiful big Guarianthe Bactia 'Grape Wax' that bloomed earlier this year however this mystery Guarianthe blooming now has softer sepals, not that waxy flower of Bactia 'Grape Wax'. I have a Guarianthe bowringiana that outgrew it's 10" orchid pot and had to be divided earlier this year and one of the divisions has a bloom so will take a photo of that to post alongside this unlabeled hybrid. Thank you !- Nina

Just 4 species and a natural hybrid (Gur. aurantiaca, Gur. bowringiana, Gur. patinii, Gur. skinneri, and Gur. x guatemalensis), but don't worry about it. From my observations, it takes at least 2 generations of growers to die off for an "old" name to mostly go out of use. We're only 12 years into Guarianthe.

Really nice color on this, but I agree it isn't bowringiana. There has to be some C. guttata or C. bicolor in there to get that depth of color, but first generation crosses would usually have heavy texture. A pretty mystery.

Here's photo taken today of flowers on that Guarianthe bowringiana division. Posting next to the photo of no ID mystery bowringiana hybrid.
