i started my collection with noids. so now i am aiming for a named orchid, be it species or
hybrid, but i am more of a specie person. I still buy noid's occationally when i see that
it has a pretty bloom or it is a specimen plant.

hmmm well im a person who likes to revive so weather it be a noid or not and its being neglected ill get it ...depending...lol..Then thats when the research comes into play... but in the future i do want to hybridize....so names would be great...so i have to search around for some venders.. Im the type who usually has to see the plant in person...so im not to sure about online vendors.... but im sure that will change.....or if you guys want to PM a couple named ones to me...lol...;P...well its up in the air for me.....either way............I love plants

I find it fun sometimes to try and look up what I bought and find the id.It can be tricky sometimes,so that can be a pain.I mostly see it,like it, and buy it, id or not.

I have a few NOID's because they were a great price. I love to experiment, and what better to experiment on, than a fairly inexpensive orchid? Next up is growing ( or killing a NOID ) in cedar mulch. Will let you know "what" happens. Betty :-D

I have several. About 3 that I purchased when I first started growing. The rest are gifts. I no longer buy NOIDS, but I care for them just as well as I do my named varities, and they reward me with some of the prettiest flowers.

I'm with AtlantaR. If its in distress on the bargain rack doomed to the trash, I will rescue it tag or not! Have a couple with tags like 'White with red lip' and 'Large Pink/Lavender' some others with specific tags like 'Hilo Bay' and 'Howards Dream' But many more that are a complete mystery! All happy and revived from wilty and yellow to tons of new leaves and roots in my care. I'll figure out the name once they bloom.
It's the challenge of growing a healthy plant, not necessarily the flowers that attracted me to orchids in the first place.

I try NEVER to rescue a NOID, unless the orchid has a tag saying what kind of orchid it is; plus it has to be one that I want/or a good one...Betty :-)

I had good intentions of only collecting named orchids. Early on when I started collecting, I managed to find a few named orchids locally but most of my collection has been purchased online. When my local store got a shipment of great looking NOID phals, I walked past them several weeks in a row reminding myself that I liked to know the "pedigree" on my plants so I could learn more about them.

By about the 5th time I ventured near those NOIDs, I had begun suffering acquisition withdrawal because we've had sub-zero temps since late October that make ordering a shipment a bad idea. "Just one more NOID wouldn't hurt," I thought, and a pretty double spike white w/ red lip jumped into my cart. I tried to console myself when I got home-- "I don't have THAT many NOIDs" --and I sat down to count them. I was stunned to discover that of over 70 orchids I have acquired in the last 12 months my only NOIDs were one Den., two mini-phals and my bronze-beauty HalfID catt.

Since then, the weather is still cold and now the rationale goes something like this: "How can I possibly be a Newbie orchid collector without a bunch of NOID phals? That just doesn't seem right!" It has allowed me to skulk home with two more new orchids. My phal population is still under 30% NOID. Hopefully the weather will improve before my named/NOID ratio gets out of control.

Some of the noids are prettier than the pedigreed ......
