I have also been growing orchids in water for the last couple of years. No new spikes yet but these were badly damaged orchids when they came my way. There is plenty of good evidence of new growth on the bottom and the top. I can relate with the success you have reported here.

I don't know if it is just my imagination but I think I have read in this thread that you have grown a cymbidium orchid in water culture.
How was the cymbidium? I wanted to try water culture with my cymbidium... because for some reasons, I usually end up killing my cymbidiums without even trying.
Also I was thinking of switching on water culture for my cattleya which has lost all of its leaves and has a poor root system. I tried almost everything but they don't seem to work (on getting new growth/roots)... any helpful tips?

The idea with water culture (invented about 25-30 years ago by Rod Venger of the no-longer-existing Venger's Orchids in Colorado Springs), is to submerge the roots only. However, you can't just pull a plant out of another medium and submerge them, as that will result in suffocation and death of the existing roots.

Just like the "tailoring" of roots I expound upon repotting a plant into semi-hydroponics, the plant will need to grow new roots into the water that are optimal for that environment. So, a plant just putting out new roots will be the best candidate for the move.

Recalling some of our conversations, Rod found that keeping the water temperature at a minimum of about 70F was a key to success. Changing the water out frequently and regularly was also important, as it developed quite a "scent" if that was not done.

Hello! It's been awhile. I had tried water culture with my cattleya orchids. 2 of my cattleyas were attacked by critters (worms). I had no idea where they came. I noticed the orchids getting sick when I saw the roots. Most of the roots were dammaged and I was about to throw them away. Seeing this thread made me hopeful. (keeping my fingers crossed) This method may save them.

Oh and the keiki has a nice spike growing from it but her mother plants roots are terrible

Has anyone tried this method for any length of time, like years? I really want to know.
