    Cool Vanda Hybrids Parentage

    Hello,

I have two Vandas in spike at the moment, and I think that it would be a good idea to have a comprehensive idea of the parentage of both plants.

I was wondering if anyone could possibly further enlighten me?

With regards to Vanda Blue Magic, I have discovered that it's full name is 'Vanda Gomalco's Blue Magic,' and that it is a cross between V.coerulea and V. Gordon Dillon. I am trying to find more detail with regards to this...

My other Vanda is called 'Exotic Purple,' and I believe the full name is 'Vanda Sunanda Exotic Purple.' I have been unable to find out about the parents for this one..

Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Kate.

    Update:

I have worked out the complete parentage of Vanda Blue Magic from the International Orchid Register. It was an interesting exercise. 5 species make up the genetic mix of this complex hybrid:
-Majority Vanda coerulea, followed by Vanda sanderiana (involved in 10 of the hybrids if I have done it correctly), then Vanda luzonica, Vanda tricolor and Vanda dearei (the last 3 involved in 1 hybrid each).

18 steps in total to reach Vanda Blue Magic (tracing back through seed parent Vanda Gordon Dillon, as species V. coerulea is pollen parent). The starting point (or finishing, as that where I ended up with just species), was Vanda Manila, the primary hybrid of Vanda luzonica and Vanda sanderiana.

I still cannot find anything on Vanda Exotic Purple though...

Vanda 'Exotic Purple' and Vanda Sunanda do not appear in OrchidWiz. Perhaps it has another name or the spelling of Sunanda is not correct?

    cheers,

Hi Bruce, thank you for the help. I am a bit stuck with the 'Exotic Purple,' as I purchased it from the RHS London Orchid Show this year, and at the time I asked for a label, and was just given 'Exotic Purple.' I have mentioned 'Sunanda,' as I have seen it referred to that on the internet, but it may well be incorrect. I will try to track down the nursery, I believe they were French or Belgium. I should have taken a proper note at the time. RHS has a list of the nurseries though, so I will look through those..even so, there is absolutely nothing on the internet about the parentage of a Vanda Exotic Purple, which I find weird...

It's a smart idea to know the parentage for identifying what crosses can work for you, the 'Blue Magic' should be nice, Gordon Dillion can produce some beautiful blooms.
    Hi Ed,
I believe that is the nursery. I sound only 98% sure since I did not make a note at the time - fatal error - when 6 months later and my memory is fuzzy.. I will email them and ask for the parentage..I am not sure if that will get me anywhere, but I will try. If it is a recognized hybrid, it should atleast be in the Orchid Wiki or International Orchid Register...
