Unhappy Phal in distress - please Help!

    Hi All!

I recently bought a pot of phals abt 2 months ago.. they had quite a few buds and were blooming pretty well. I tried not to water the plant too frequently abt 3-4days once. However, I noticed the roots have started to shrivel up, but I don't want to over water the plant. Some buds are growing but most of them shrivel and drop even before they can bloom.

I live in Dubai, it's practically a desert, so my air conditioning is on most of the time and i've set it to 20deg. The air tends to be a little dry so i don't think there's much moisture. Should i re-pot the plant? I'm pretty sure i'm killing it!

Also, after the flowers have bloomed, should i cut the stem? Where should i cut it? I'm concerned if the stem grows too long then the plant might have trouble being kept upright. Sorry if I seem to be asking silly questions!

Pls help! This is my first plant I've tried to post the photos.. Thank you so much!!!

Welcome. Sorry, I am rather new myself, and only have 1 phal, so I am not the right person to answer you. But, since it is a weekend, there are not a lot of folks posting, and I didn't want you to think no one cared about your poor orchid.

It seems you are being very careful not to overwater...which is good, as too many orchids are drowned. Phals do not want to dry out totally though, and yours looks pretty dry. Of course, sometimes when an orchid looks dry, it is hard to tell if it really is, or if it was way too wet at one time, and the roots died from that.

Did it seem healthy when you got it, or was it all soggy? And, has it been staying just a bit moist between waterings?

Hi Kmac, thanks for the reply! Don't worry abt being new to this, we'll all learn together!!

When I got the plant, the roots were nice and did not seem dry at all. It looked rather healthy to me... it only started drying up when I got it back. Do the roots look dead? is there a way to save it now? I've just been misting my Phal. I'm not sure if I should be pouring water down through the soil. As I feel like I'm drowning it. I may be doing this all wrong What's the right way to water my Phal?

It doesn't sound at all like you are drowning it. When did you last water it (pour water all thru the pot...not just mist the leaves)?

This is not one of the orchids that needs to dry out well between waterings. I water mine when the soil becomes almost, but not quite, dry. It has been doing well, and is blooming. Stick your finger in the pot...if it feels dry an inch or so down, I'd water it.

Hi and welcome! Based on your photos and what you say here, I think it is lack of water. I would guess your roots are very dry at this point. When you water a phal, you should run water through the pot and let it drain out. Don't let it set in a dish of water or it could rot the roots.

You will probably have to unpot this Phal and take a look at the roots. Below, I will link you to several Phal articles here in our community that should help you. Good luck and again - WELCOME to OrchidTalk!!

You should be able to save it. I had one that I drowned. It only had 1 good root and a couple small ones and 2 droopy, spongy leaves. With a little tlc it now has roots and 4 new leaves in just a few months! Have hope.
