so, by the way, this does have a light peppery scent in the morning before i leave for work, and none at all at night when i get home... tomorrow i will be home all day, so hoping to enjoy the scent.

this plant is so odd growing. the flowers are almost completely spent. they began to fade and shrivel as soon as they were all open. there are only 2 left now. such a short blooming compared to other orchids i can think of. not sure i will get another of this type yet though. the flowers on this are an unreal shade of black, unless they are in in direct light when at certain angles they blaze a brilliant dark blood red. if i get anything in this family again i will look into longer blooming relatives, if any are out there. otherwise i'd like something with more spread-out flowers on longer spikes. these were beautiful, but a bit crunched together, especially with the two spikes growing along side like that. some of the relatives have long elegant hanging spikes, like some of the cynoches. the scent is pretty much morning only, if in bright light, light peppery scent, maybe like a basil relative, nice. the bulbs got a little shriveled looking, so i gave more water once after the flowers were open. but now it has only one leaf. the older bulb still looks a bit shriveled. the newer bulb looks plumper again, so i think the watering was ok. this one really makes me nervous. before this my only real experience with winter-dormant types was with a dendrobium kingianum. that thing is tough as nails. i will feel much better when a new growth sprouts.
