Smile Pleurothallis grobyi x self 1st Blooming

I have had this Pleurothallis grobyi x self since June 2014. It had never bloomed before until now. Only one spike this time. Very small flowers. It hangs in one of my orchidariums. Gets watered daily with 1/4 teaspoon/gallon K-Lite fertilizer.

You would think that with a plant that size you would be getting more then one spike. I hope we will see macro pictures of those blooms as they look very interesting.

That is macro! Very small flowers. Hopefully as it matures and blooms again, they will be a bit larger. But IOSPE says the flower size is 'less than 1/8 inch'.

I'll try, but I believe I was as close as I could get with the macro lens.

Here are the closest I can get. I added an 1/8 inch mini-jack in for size scale.

Looks very nice Harvey. What are the culture conditions you grow these in?

At least it is a little better to see what the blooms look like. Thanks.

It hangs in an orchidarium which gets medium light from a couple different artificial sources. Humidity is 50- 80%. Water daily with 1/4 teaspoon/gallon of K-Lite fertilizer.

Harvey, I was curious what inspired you to get this orchid in the first place. I admit it would not be on my wish list. Two years waiting for a few blossoms that you can barely see would seem like a let-down, but maybe it's just the challenge of getting it to bloom that matters more.

I wonder if maybe you are using too much fertilizer so you are getting loads of leaves but not much blooming. Since K-lite consists of crystals of all different sizes you could get too much of one thing and not enough of another if you only use a 1/4 teaspoon per gallon. I make up a gallon of stock using 2 teaspoons of K-lite, then use a portion of that mixed in another gallon of water to get the ppm of N I want. I'm sure Ray will let me know if that thinking is off or on.

I bought it when I got a fever for minis. It only takes 30 seconds of time a day. It hangs and looks nice. It probably wasn't too costly. Under $15. I have to admit I didn't know the flowers were that small when I bought it. But that said, I guess it will be much more impressive if it gets mature enough or the conditions I provide it are good enough for it to have many spikes in flower at the same time as I have seen pics of. But that was a much more mature (bigger clump) than mine. And now the challenge to get it to be like that.

AS to the blooming. I recently moved it from a lower light environment to the brighter environment. And then it was able to spike. So I think it may have been light that was holding it back from flowering. Said to like mostly shade but that doesn't mean low light apparently.
